South Korea is in the top 10 countries with the highest rate of cosmetic surgeries. The Korean beauty standard includes: v-shaped jaw, large eyes and lips, small face with pale and flawless skin. Japanese beauty standards additionally include double eyelids. Many East Asian individuals are encouraged to get plastic surgery in order to become more 'beautiful'. I personally believe such beauty standards to be extremely high and ignorant of the importance, and true beauty of individuality. Appearance should not play as big a role in wether someone is considered 'beautiful', as each and every one of us is beautiful in our own way, and we do not have to comply with what is considered with 'standard'. Instead, we should all focus more on becoming kind, loving, and caring people because those are the things that I believe hold the most value.
This piece is meant to highlight the anxiety and social pressures people in Japan and Korea face when talking about beauty. The piece focuses on an ordinary person who is living in one of these countries and wants to become a better-looking person as seen by the two sides of the social beauty spectrum where pretty people such as pop idols and actors/actresses are praised and even have people who follow and support them very religiously whereas people deemed ugly by society are condemned and as a result, the pressure to become more pretty increases and leads to extreme anxiety through social media and other forms of public interaction. As seen by the black strokes on the boy's shoulders, he's forced and pressurized to become a better person on the outside and is haunted by the expectations of his society. However, granted the boy is ordinary and not considered ugly by society's standards, the pressure to become even more acceptable by society increases as even those considered pretty had to go through extreme methods to become prettier. And after seeing how society perceives beauty, the person in the center is torn over how to improve his look, which is representative of how people not deemed pretty by societal standards may think and may think negatively of themselves.
There are lots of things that cause stress such as school, office, a big workload or a big agenda and to do list that is difficult. However, there is just as many ways to also relieve stress such as playing games with friends, meditating, painting and drawing or taking a walk just by yourself, another person, or your pet. And I also did this to show that it's okay to take breaks and do something for yourself.
